"Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia" takes astronomy and biological systems as its theme

The event series " Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia" (Between Buns and Borussia) will take place on four Saturdays in the summer semester 2023.

What does astronomy have to do with the plant world? How could cellular life arise on early Earth and can it be reproduced in the laboratory today? What exactly is cosmic radiation? And how does the warp drive from Star Trek actually work? Interested members of the public can find out the answers to these questions at the lecture series " Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia: Moderne Physik für alle" (Between Buns and Borussia: Modern Physics for Everyone). The hybrid lectures are aimed at adults as well as children and young people and provide information about physics in an entertaining way.

In the first lecture, "Astronomy and Mathematics in the Plant World" on 27 May, Dr Burkard Steinrücken from the Westphalian People's Observatory and Planetarium Recklinghausen will show how plants align themselves with the sun and gravity and arrange their flowers and leaves as cleverly as possible. This results in astonishing symmetries and patterns that tell of mathematical connections. Some particularly beautiful examples of floral astronomy and mathematics will be presented in this lecture.

The four events in this summer semester will take place on Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 12:30. The lectures will be held on site in lecture halls 1 and 2 in Hörsaalgebäude II, Otto-Hahn-Straße 4; viewers can join them digitally via a YouTube livestream. The only exception will be the event on 24 June, when a talk-concert by the University Orchestra will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (concert starts at 11 a.m.) in the Audimax. The quiz for the respective lecture will take place online and will be activated on the event website 15 minutes before the start of the lecture and deactivated 30 minutes after the event.
