Master of Science / Czech Technical University Prag

When concluding my Bachelor's studies and diving into my Master’s degree at TU Dortmund University, I realized it there would only be two more years of studies left. Since I felt that I needed to gain more experience before finishing university, going abroad emerged as a wonderful and thrilling pathway to do so. Due to my time as a CERN Summer Student, remote because of COVID, I was in good contact with my respective supervisor in Prague, André Sopczak, and we developed an ERASMUS agreement between the TU Dortmund University and the Czech Technical University in Prague.

Being the first student ever from Dortmund to arrive in Prague, especially in the middle of the pandemic in the winter of 2021, I was worried about what challenges and circumstances would await me once in Prague.

Despite typical starting difficulties in finding subjects that suited me and figuring which of them would be held in English, Prague turned out to be one of the best decisions in my life. The city, with its old city center, many beautiful corners, and green areas, remains one of the most beautiful cities I witnessed in Europe. The Czech Republic is a marvelous place close by where you still experience a complete cultural change with its Slavic culture, cuisine, and way of life giving you the true ERASMUS experience.

Prague is a vibrant hub of exchange students around Europe, with many ERASMUS students around to explore the city with, experience local pub culture, and ask for advice when needed. The ERASMUS Club at the CTU Prague and the Masarykova Dormitory created a truly inclusive community with many activities throughout the semester bridging our international community. Additionally, they offered to connect you to local student buddies who would help you find your way around the city and mine even organized a trip with a group of ERASMUS students to climb the highest mountain of the Czech Republic, creating an everlasting memory.

Studying in Prague brought a unique challenge to me, with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering being our partner faculty in Prague. But don’t you worry, even for me being a high-energy particle physicist there was a variety of thrilling courses to choose from. Especially the Department for Cybernetics and Robotics has amazing courses to glance over the edge of a physicist’s skillset. From Compressed Sensing to Space Engineering, you will surely find exciting subjects that will give you expertise in completely new areas. Additionally, students going to Prague have the chance to research during their semester abroad together with Dr. André Sopczak in the ATLAS collaboration which gives you another opportunity to practice research firsthand.

With all that being said, Prague was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me and it helped me to find myself and learn about myself better than anything else. If you are considering Prague, let me tell you, it’s worth the trip!
