Before the exchange
A stay abroad requires careful planning. The Department of Physics and the International Office are here to support you as much as possible with your preparations.
Application
As soon as you have been nominated by your home university, you can apply at the International Office. Please note the following deadlines for your application:
-
Winter term (October to February): 15. May
-
Sommer term (April to July): 15. November
For Erasmus coordinators of our partner universitites
Please nominate your students at TU Dortmund University by sending the following information to erasmustu-dortmundde:
Name of the student
Email of the student
Period of Stay (winter or summer term)
Study level (Bachelor or Master)
Subjet of studies: Physics
Planning the duration of your stay
You can find the semester dates and lecture periods on the International Office website. When planning your stay, please keep in mind that examinations typically take place during the first three weeks after the end of lectures. Additionally, TU Dortmund University offers a 4-week intensive German course specifically for exchange students in September and March, catering to all language levels from A1 to B2. These courses are free of charge and open to all exchange students!
We highly recommend participating in the intensive language course, as it provides the perfect opportunity to connect with other exchange students, join welcome events, and handle organizational matters before lectures begin (with the support of the International Office). For more information about the intensive German course, please visit the International Office website .
Please let the Erasmus Coordination of the department (erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde) know as early as possible about your arrival time. We will then arrange your pick-up on campus and accompany you to your accommodation.
Course selection
All courses in the Department of Physics, including the dates and locations, can be found in the lsf course catalog. The courses are usually finalized towards the end of the lecture period of the previous semester. However, most courses take place annually, so you can use the previous year's courses as a guide.
You can find a detailed description of the course content in the module handbook for the respective degree program:
- Bachelor Physics (mostly in German)
- Master Physics
- Bachelor Medical Physics (in German)
- Master Medical Physics (in German)
Courses in the Master’s degree program in Physics are offered entirely in English, and many courses in the Bachelor’s degree program in Physics are also available in English. Exchange students may also take courses taught in German; however, we recommend a minimum language proficiency level of B2 to effectively follow the lectures and seminars. Bachelor’s students may also take certain lectures from the Master’s program if they meet the prerequisites outlined in the module handbook. If you are unsure, please feel free to contact erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde. for guidance.
As some course titles in LSF have not yet been translated, we have compiled a list of English-taught courses available in the upcoming semester. This should make it easier to match the names in LSF with their corresponding descriptions in the module handbook.
Are you particularly interested in particle physics? If so, we recommend planning your exchange for the summer term. TU Dortmund University collaborates with the University of Bologna and the University of Clermont-Auvergne to offer an international master degree program in particle physics. The cohort spends each semester at one of the partner universities, with the summer term taking place in Dortmund. In addition to a wide range of particle physics courses, the summer term features an international guest lecturer in the Physics Department and a vibrant community of international students.
Language courses
Are you interested in learning German or other languages in Dortmund? Then you are welcome to apply for courses at the Center for Higher Education - Foreign Languages Department. Please note that we cannot include language courses for international students in the Learning Agreement, as we cannot guarantee any spots. If you are participating in a language course, it will be listed on your Transcript of Records at the end of the exchange.
Learning Agreement
Once you have selected your courses, it is time to complete the Learning Agreement. Your home university can advise you how to fill out the information. In most cases, you will complete your Learning Agreement online and we will be notified automatically as soon as your home university has approved the courses.
Once we have checked the courses you have chosen, we will also sign the agreement for you. If your university does not use OLA, please send your Learning Agreement by e-mail to erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde.
