Before the exchange

A stay abroad involves a lot of planning. The Department of Physics and the International Office would like to support you as much as possible with your preparations.

Application

As soon as you have been nominated by your home university, you can apply at the International Office. Please note the following deadlines for your application:

  • Winter term (October to February): 15. May

  • Sommer term (April to July): 15. November

For Erasmus coordinators of our partner universitites

Please nominate your students at TU Dortmund University by sending the following information to erasmustu-dortmundde:

Name of the student

Email of the student

Period of Stay (winter or summer term)

Study level (Bachelor or Master)

Subjet of studies: Physics

Planning the duration of your stay

You can find the semester dates and lecture period on the website of the International Office. When planning your stay, you should bear in mind that examinations usually take place in the first three weeks after the end of lectures. Furthermore, TU Dortmund University offers specifically for exchange students a 4-week intensive German course in September and March for all language levels A1 - B2. These courses are free of charge and open to all exchange students! We recommend that you take part in the intensive language course, as it is the perfect opportunity to get to know other exchange students, take part in the welcome events and take care of organisational matters before lectures starts (with the support of the International Office). You can find more information about the intensive German course on the website of the International Office.

Please let the Erasmus Coordination of the department (erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde) know as early as possible about your arrival time. We will then arrange your pick-up on campus and accompany you to your accommodation.

Course selection

All courses in the Department of Physics, including the dates and locations, can be found in the lsf course catalog. The courses are usually finalized towards the end of the lecture period of the previous semester. However, most courses take place annually, so you can use the previous year's courses as a guide.

You can find a detailed description of the course content in the module handbook for the respective degree program:

Courses in the Master's degree program in Physics are offered entirely in English, but many courses in the Bachelor's degree program in Physics are also offered in English. Exchange students can also take courses in German; we do however recommend a minimum language level of B2 in order to be able to follow the lectures and/or seminars. Bachelor students can also take some lectures from the Master's program if they meet the prerequisites described in the module handbook. If you are unsure, please contact erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde.

As some course titles have not been translated yet in lsf, we have compiled a list of courses in English that are offered in the next semester. This will hopefully make it easier for you to map the name in lsf to the description in the module handbook.

Are you specifically interested in particle physics? Then we would recommend that you do your exchange in the summer term. TU Dortmund University offers an international master degree programme together with the University of Bologna and University of Clermont-Auvergne. The cohort is spending each semester at one of the universities and in the summer term, the cohort is studying in Dortmund. Besides a large number of courses on particle physics, we also have an international guest lecturer in the physics department and a large number of international students.

Language courses

Are you interested in learning German or other languages in Dortmund? Then you are welcome to apply for courses at the Center for Higher Education - Foreign Languages Department. Please note that we cannot include language courses for international students in the Learning Agreement, as we cannot guarantee any spots. If you are participating in a language course, it will be listed on your Transcript of Records at the end of the exchange.

Learning Agreement

Once you have selected your courses, it is time to complete the Learning Agreement. Your home university can advise you how to fill out the information. In most cases, you will complete your Learning Agreement online and we will be notified automatically as soon as your home university has approved the courses.

OLA

Once we have checked the courses you have chosen, we will also sign the agreement for you. If your university does not use OLA, please send your Learning Agreement by e-mail to erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde.
