Big Bang to Big Data (B3D) - NRW cluster for data-intensive radio astronomy

As part of the "Profiling 2020" initiative, the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has been funding innovative projects at universities and in the university environment since 1 November 2021 with which research institutions in the state can further develop existing profiles and set new priorities. In a highly competitive environment, a network in which researchers from the Department of Physics are centrally involved was also selected for funding.

Within the framework of the now funded initiative "NRW Cluster for Data-Intensive Radio Astronomy: Big Bang to Big Data - B3D", the scientists led by Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Rhode and PD Dr. Dominik Elsässer are dedicated to the development and application of modern methods of data analysis, machine learning and artificial intelligence to the enormous data streams of current and future large-scale international radio astronomy projects such as MeerKAT or Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The project group at TU Dortmund University plays a decisive role in coordinating the field of data science. Central contributions here are dedicated, for example, to the development of even more powerful algorithms for data processing and for reconstructing images from interferometric observations, i.e. measurements obtained simultaneously with radio telescopes at distant locations, which enable extremely sharp images.

The research in the group ideally complements the existing activities at the faculty in the field of astro- and astroparticle physics by enabling a transfer of methods from high-energy astrophysics to the increasingly important field of radio astronomy. For the next three years, the group at the Department of Physics will be funded with a scientific staff position and travel funds. The research is also geared towards sustainability and will take place in close cooperation with the collaborative partners from all over NRW and with industrial companies in the Dortmund area.
