BMBF ErUM: Funding for the IceCube, CTA, and D-MeerKAT projects at the Department of Physics

Modern basic research in physics often requires the use of large equipment, experiments and telescopes that can only be set up and operated in international cooperation. This also, and especially, applies to astro- and astroparticle physics. The research groups led by Prof. Dr. Dr. Wolfgang Rhode and PD Dr. Dominik Elsässer at the Department of Physics are investigating the neutrino sky with the IceCube South Pole experiment, cosmic gamma ray sources with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), and are conducting radio astronomy in the D-MeerKAT-III project. The BMBF's framework programme "Exploration of Universe and Matter ErUM" is an indispensable pillar for the participation of university working groups in such large-scale projects. For the three-year funding period starting on 01.07.2023, Wolfgang Rhode (IceCube) and Dominik Elsässer (CTA, D-MeerKAT-III) were able to collectively acquire over one million euros in funding from ErUM. These funds will play a central role in ensuring that researchers and students at our department can continue to play a direct role in opening new windows into the universe.
