"Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia" starts into the Winter Semester 2023/24

Why does beer foam form? What has happened since the Big Bang? And how do you distinguish serious from dubious sources of information in the digital age? All these questions will be addressed in the lectures of the popular public series "Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia: Modern Physics for Everyone" in the winter semester 2023/24.
At the first lecture "Physics of beer (and other liquids)" as part of the Open Day on 28. October, Prof. Jan Kierfeld from the Department of Physics will demonstrate the different properties of various liquids - from breakfast coffee to stadium beer. The focus is on the phenomenon of surface tension, which has occupied scientists for many years and influences the shape of soap bubbles and coffee stains, among other things.
The programme continues on 16. December with a look back into the past and an outlook into the future of the universe. Prof. Christoph Lange from the Department of Physics will take participants on a journey from the formation of the first stars to the end of time, explaining numerous physical concepts such as nuclear pasta and quantum vacuums.
The lecture series will continue in the new year: Prof. Holger Wormer from the Institute of Journalism and the Rhine Ruhr Center for Science Communication Research will talk about serious information gathering on the internet in his lecture on 13. January 2024. Participants will learn, among other things, which studies are trustworthy and how to recognise fake news on social media. The focus is on current medical and environmental topics.
The final show will be "Die Physikanten" on 27. January 2024 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia". The duo, founded by TU graduate Marcus Weber, will be showing spectacular experiments in physics.
The first three events will take place on Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 12:30. The lectures will be held on site in lecture halls 1 and 2 in Hörsaalgebäude II, Otto-Hahn-Straße 4, and the audience can join in digitally via a YouTube live stream. The quiz for each lecture will continue to take place online and will be activated on the event website 15 minutes before the lecture begins and deactivated 30 minutes after the event. The Physikanten show is scheduled for 27 January 2024 from 11 a.m. at Dortmunder U.
