Bachelor of Science / Purdue University

In the summer semester of 2018, the Going Aroad program of Pep et al. made it possible for me to write my bachelor thesis at Purdue University in Indiana, USA in cooperation with TU Dortmund University. This university is nationally known in the USA for its excellence in engineering sciences and especially in aerospace. The university is considered the "hotbed of astronauts" because it has trained 25 American astronauts to date, including Neil Armstrong.

In physics, Purdue is very broadly positioned with research groups in applied physics, geophysics, and high-energy physics (HEP), although I gained insights into HEP in particular through my bachelor's thesis.
I wrote it in the group of  Prof. Jung, which is involved in projects of the CMS collaboration. The topic of my bachelor thesis was the simulation of the thermal behavior of the CMS Inner Tracker, where I started from a simplified structure to shorten the simulation time. From Dortmund I was supervised by Prof. Spaan from Lehrstule E5. I liked the topic and the supervision of my bachelor thesis very much, which is why I can recommend Purdue University to anyone who is thinking about doing a semester abroad in the USA.

Purdue University is a campus university and flows smoothly into the city of Lafayette. Apart from physics, I was offered a wide range of sports activities and the lively social life on campus enabled me to quickly make social connections.
