Information for incoming international students

Starting out in a new city or country can be difficult. The International Office supports you in your preparations and offers welcome events for international students to help you quickly feel at home in Dortmund. We particularly recommend that you take part in the Come2Campus event, which lasts several days, to obtain lots of important information and get to know your fellow students.

On this page, we have compiled some important information for your start in the physics department in Dortmund.

Welcome event for international students in M.Sc. Physics

When?

Wednesday, 15th October 2025, 11:00 to 12:00 h

Where? Hybrid:

  • Room P2-E0-414 (called “AV-Raum”; in the old Physics building, Campus Nord, on the ground floor next to the student workplaces) or
  • via Zoom

Late Arrival

If you require a Late Arrival Letter please get in touch with the Office of the Dean of Studies.

For most courses in the M.Sc. Physics program, there is no registration at the beginning of the semester (with the exception of the lab course “Advanced Laboratory Course for Master Students I”), but only at the end of the semester for the exams. Therefore, you can also join the program late in the semester, but it is clear that the later you join, the less likely you are to pass the exam.

Organizational matters

The list of courses offered in a semester can be found on the (somewhat outdated) lsf portal. The dates and room information can also be found there. Since lsf is only maintained in German, we offer a pdf version in English here.

Rooms whose names begin with “P” are located in the old physics building (Otto-Hahn-Str. 4), while rooms with the designation “CP” are located in the new chemistry/physics building (Otto-Hahn-Str. 4a).

We have compiled examples of how to structure the elective area for the most common thematic focuses in the study plans.

The description of the courses can be found in the module handbook.

For most courses in the M.Sc. Physics program, there is no registration at the beginning of the semester (with the exception of the module “Advanced Laboratory Course for Master Students I”), but only at the end of the semester for the exams.

The detailed organization of the courses is carried out via their respective moodle rooms. You can find the link to these by clicking on the course in lsf. Some of the moodle rooms are only created shortly before the start of the semester.

Registration for exams takes place via the BOSS system.
