Robot soccer - soccer without emotions?

Start: End: Location: Hörsaalgebäude II, Hörsaal 1 und 2, Campus Nord, TU Dortmund
Event type:
  • Brötchen-und-Borussia
In the 2026 summer semester, the "Zwischen Brötchen und Borussia" event series will once again bring physics topics to a wide audience. The lectures are aimed at the interested public - adults as well as children and young people - and take place in person. This time, the focus is on the "XXL Football World Cup 2026". The fourth lecture in the series will explore the question of whether soccer will remain a human sport in the future or whether humanoid robots could possibly compete with the best teams in the world in 2050.

In RoboCup, research teams around the world are working to develop autonomous humanoid robots that compete against each other. Skills such as perception, humanoid walking and game intelligence are continuously improved and tested under real-life conditions. Modern methods such as reinforcement learning, image processing and more powerful robotic systems are driving development forward, while also demonstrating how difficult it is to teach machines to play soccer.

Students can earn a student diploma by participating in the event and completing a quiz on the content of the event in the lecture hall. The student diploma is credited as part of the coursework in the first semester when studying physics or medical physics at TU Dortmund University.
