The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and TU Dortmund University have maintained a close research collaboration for many years. Since 2015 the researchers from both universities have jointly published approximately 1100 research articles, primarily in physics, astrophysics, and chemistry.

Founded in 1958, USTC is a premier research university affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is constantly ranked among China's top universities. USTC is renowned for its elite education and exceptional research performance. Since its establishment, nearly 60,000 undergraduate students have graduated, among whom more than 60 have been elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering – a record that reflects the university’s outstanding talent cultivation.

The School of Physical Sciences in USTC comprises the Departments of Physics, Modern Physics, Optics and Optical Engineering, Astronomy, and Engineering and Applied Physics, as well as the Physics Experiment Teaching Center. It hosts a range of nationally leading research facilities, including the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, the Hefei National Center for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, the Innovation Center of Quantum Information and Quantum Physics, and the State Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics.

The School of Physical Sciences has nearly 500 academic staff members, including professors and associate professors, among them 19 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The School enrolls approximately 1,800 undergraduate and master’s students, as well as around 800 doctoral students.
