International Masterclasses – Hands on Particle Physics in Dortmund
- News

In February and March, more than 70 students were guests at the Department of Physics to take part in the international masterclasses. These have been organised by an international network of universities and research institutions for 20 years and give pupils an insight into experimental particle physics. After an introductory lecture on the subject area, the pupils can analyse data from the ATLAS and LHCb experiments themselves under the guidance of the local particle physics working groups. They then share the results of their investigations in a subsequent video conference with other schools around the world, which is moderated by scientists at CERN. This was also the case in March 2024: around 50 pupils searched for the Higgs boson and new fundamental particles and forces in the data from the ATLAS experiment. They then shared and discussed their findings with schools in Lavras and Sao Paulo in Brazil, Benasque in Spain, Cacak in Serbia and Timisoara in Romania.

![3D visualisation of human neuronal tissue reconstructed by multi-scale X-ray phase contrast tomography. Neuronal cell nuclei are shown in yellow for the granule neurons in the dentate gyrus region of the hippocampus. Blood vessels are shown in red. By changing the X-ray optical magnification in the multi-scale recordings, one can zoom into regions-of-interest (red ovals). In these scans the resolution is high enough to resolve sub-structures of the nucleus, associated with different DNA packing regimes.
