Jack Steinberger died on December 12, 2020, at the age of 99. His impressive career as a particle physicist was crowned in 1988 with the Nobel Prize in Physics, which he received together with Leon Lederman and Melvin Schwartz for the discovery of the muon neutrino. He was linked to TU Dortmund University by several joint experiments at CERN, as well as other shared research interests such as the study of matter-antimatter asymmetries. Jack was a friend and mentor to many Dortmund physicists - especially young scientists. It was a great honor for the Department of Physics to award Jack Steinberger an honorary doctorate in 1991.
