Before the exchange
A stay abroad requires careful planning. The Department of Physics and the International Office are here to support you as much as possible with your preparations.
As soon as you have been nominated by your home university, you can apply at the International Office. Please note the following deadlines for your application:
- Winter term (October to February): 15. May
- Summer term (April to July): 15. November
You can find the semester dates and lecture periods on the International Office website. When planning your stay, please keep in mind that examinations typically take place during the first three weeks after the end of lectures.
4-week intensive German course (more information)
- Specifically for exchange students in September and March (free of charge)
- Language levels: A1 to B2
- Advantages:
- Connect with other exchange students
- Join welcome events
- Handle organizational matters before lectures begin (with the support of the International Office)
Please let the Erasmus Coordination of the department (erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde) know as early as possible about your arrival time. We will then arrange your pick-up on campus and accompany you to your accommodation.
All courses in the Department of Physics, including the dates and locations, can be found in the lsf course catalog. The courses are usually finalized towards the end of the lecture period of the previous semester. However, most courses take place annually, so you can use the previous year's courses as a guide. Unfortunately, lsf is only maintained in German, therfore we are providing a pdf version in Englisch.
You can find detailed descriptions of the course content in the module handbooks:
- Bachelor Physik (mostly in German)
- Bachelor Medizinphysik (mostly in German)
- Master Physics (English)
- Master in Medical Physics and Physics of Living Systems (English)
- International Master of Advanced Methods in Particle Physics
- Only the course of the second semester can be selected in the summer term in Dortmund
Please note that not all courses listed in the module handbook are offered every semester / every year.
Courses in German
Exchange students may select courses taught in German; however, we recommend a minimum language proficiency level of B2 to effectively follow the lectures and seminars. Bachelor students may also take certain lectures from the Master’s program if they meet the prerequisites outlined in the module handbook. If you are unsure, please feel free to contact erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde. for guidance.
Internships
Are you interested in working on a project during your exchange? Take a look at the research group pages for inspiration and to find the right person to contact. The Erasmus coordination in the physics department can help you find an exciting project based on your interests.
You are particularly interested in particle physics?
If so, we recommend planning your exchange for the summer term. TU Dortmund University collaborates with the University of Bologna and the University of Clermont-Auvergne to offer an international master degree program in particle physics. The cohort spends each semester at one of the partner universities, with the summer term taking place in Dortmund. In addition to a wide range of particle physics courses, the summer term features an international guest lecturer in the Physics Department and a vibrant community of international students.
Are you interested in learning German or other languages in Dortmund? Then you are welcome to apply for courses at the Center for Higher Education - Foreign Languages Department. Please note that we cannot include language courses for international students in the Learning Agreement, as we cannot guarantee any spots. If you are participating in a language course, it will be listed on your Transcript of Records at the end of the exchange.
Once you have selected your courses, it is time to complete the Learning Agreement. Your home university can advise you how to fill out the information. In most cases, you will complete your Learning Agreement online and we will be notified automatically as soon as your home university has approved the courses.
When filling out the form, add Chris Malena Delitzsch (erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde) as the "Receiving Institution Contact Person" and "Receiving Institution Responsible Person".
If your university does not use an online learning agreement, please send it to us by e-mail to erasmus.physiktu-dortmundde.
For Erasmus coordinators of our partner universitites
