The close cooperation between the research locations, as well as the interdisciplinary orientation of research priorities, has a lasting impact on the scientific landscape in the Ruhr region and beyond.

The outstanding national and international position of researchers at the universities in our region is underlined by the continued success in obtaining funding for structured programmes such as the MERCUR Center RAPP and the DFG Collaborative Research Centre 1491 "Cosmic Interacting Matters" at the RU Bochum, TU Dortmund University and BU Wuppertal, which will be newly established in 2022. The researchers in SFB 1491 combine astrophysics, particle physics and plasma physics.

The structured funding programmes, as well as the overall commitment of the Dortmund research groups at the interface between physics, computer science, data science and astrophysics, are inextricably linked with the name of our colleague Wolfgang Rhode. Over the decades, he has dedicated himself in extremely successful interdisciplinary pioneering work to fundamental questions of machine learning, artificial intelligence, research data management, the search for the sources of the highest-energy particles from the cosmos, but above all also to imparting methods and skills to future generations of researchers.

On 30 May 2022, RU Bochum, as one of our partner universities in the UA Ruhr, appointed Prof. Rhode as Honorary Professor at its Faculty of Physics and Astronomy. With this special honour, our colleagues not only pay tribute to Prof. Rhode's unique commitment to strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation, but also to his pioneering work for cooperation between the Dortmund and Bochum locations, for which SFB 1491 represents a new pinnacle.

The Faculty of Physics at TU Dortmund University congratulates its colleague Prof. Rhode most sincerely on his appointment, and looks forward to many more years of in-depth cooperation between the disciplines and locations.
