Upgrade for the IceCube cosmic neutrino detector

Please provide a copyright notice
At the end of January 2026, around 40 students from TU Dortmund University visited the nuclear research center CERN in Geneva (Switzerland).

During the Antarctic summer, 670 new optical sensors and calibration systems were installed in the ice of the South Pole to further increase the performance of the IceCube neutrino observatory. The upgrade particularly improves the measurement accuracy at lower neutrino energies and is an important step towards the planned second expansion stage IceCube-Gen2. Researchers from TU Dortmund University and Ruhr-Universität Bochum were significantly involved in the development, testing and installation of the new sensor technology - two TU scientists even worked directly on site in Antarctica.
