A camera team from WDR Lokalzeit visited the Department of Physics at TU Dortmund University to report on the latest upgrade of the IceCube cosmic neutrino detector.

During the Antarctic summer, 670 new sensors and calibration devices were installed in the Antarctic ice. The upgrade is an important step on the way to IceCube-Gen2, the planned next expansion stage of the detector.

Researchers from TU Dortmund University and Ruhr-Universität Bochum are also involved in this international project. The new optical modules and calibration devices are intended to improve the performance of the detector and further improve future measurements of neutrinos.

Prof. Dr. Christian Glaser and Jo Werthebach were interviewed for the WDR Lokalzeit report. Werthebach tested 5000 PMTs for his dissertation and was involved in the installation of the new mDOMs at the South Pole. Dr. Alicia Fattorini, who completed her doctorate at TU Dortmund University and is currently at the South Pole, also reports on life and work under the extreme conditions on site in the Lokalzeit report.

We are delighted to have the opportunity to present our research to the general public in this way!
